The "Union Square" section contained a U.S. Post Office, "New South" printing office and Adams Express offices. Hilton Head Island was officially name Port Royal S.C. from 1862 to 1872. John Sears, Hilton Head Islands Post Master, called the space in front of the shops "Union Square"
