Fort Walker
Port Royal Plantation
Fort Walker South Carolina
If you walk around Port Royal Plantation you will find what looks like hills or even a
canal. These are the hastily built remnants of For Walker. The Fort was basically hills
made from digging a trench and building up mound walls.
These were constructed in 1861 to protect against a northern attack. Col. William Heyward the Union commander attacked on November 7, 1861.
In 4 1/2 hourse, with only three guns left and ammunition almost gone, the troops
under Thomas Drayton were forced to withdraw from the island. The fort was rebuilt by the Union army and renamed Fort Welles.
For some reason, we southerners call it Fort Walker though. Go figure !
